You know your precious pet better than anyone else so, you definitely know when something is off. Remember your dog cannot describe symptoms to you, but it can show you some signs of sickness. Your pup's illness can be a stressing event for you as well as for your pet. A proper comfort is the first requirement of every sick individual and ofcourse your pet too. Along with comfort, food is the basic need which provides energy to combat from illness or infections. Just like humans, feeding a little sick pup can be a challenging task for you. Vet's PrescriptionThe first thought comes to our mind when any of our family members got sick is; visiting a physician. Whenever your dog shows some unusual symptoms, take him to the vet immediately. Acting promptly at the first signs of the sickness can be comforting to both pet and pet parent; mentally, physically as well as financially. Feed your dog as per the prescribed drug and diet plan, by your vet. 2.) Avoid LeftoversLeftovers should not be given to your sick as well as to a healthy dog. Leftovers can be the leading cause of sickness, including upset stomach, vomiting, etc., as they might contain some harmful bacteria or other microorganisms, which will upset the normal aura of your pup's body. So, never give leftover food, especially to your sick pet. 3.) Bland MealBland Meal is a diet consisting of foods that are generally soft, low in dietary fibres, well-cooked, easy to digest and not spicy. The most common bland meal you can provide to your dog is; rice boiled with chicken breast or beef. Make sure that you add double the amount of water than usual so, that the rice gets soft enough to consume and digest. Maintain HydrationDehydration is the main symptom of any illness in humans as well as in animals. If your dog is showing signs of dehydration like; Dry gums, abnormal capillary refill time which is more than 2 seconds (press dog's gum with your finger for 1-2 seconds, and note how long it takes for colour to get normal again), it's time to not ignore their condition and take it seriously. Sometimes, water is just not enough for maintaining hydration. You can also provide Pedialyte (electrolyte drink for children) to your dog. It contains all the essential electrolytes which are necessary for maintaining the hydration level in your pup. If it refuses to drink, take it to a vet who will provide it with some essential fluids through intravenous infusion. 5.) Mashed pumpkin or Sweet PotatoPumpkins and sweet potatoes are considered as a special supplement for your sick dog as they have digestive health benefits. They both are high in fibres and are rich in vitamin E, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, copper, and manganese, giving your dog a nutritional boost and digestive help. Add half tablespoon of cinnamon powder to pumpkin puree with some digestive enzymes and probiotics to it and serve it cool. It's better to provide this mixture, mixed with another mashed diet. 6.) Bone BrothBone broth is considered as a healing diet for a sick pup. It is highly nutritious that can sit comfortably in your canine's upset stomach. Add beef marrow bones or bones of chicken with lots of joints to water. Boil it, let it cool and then remove the bones. It usually takes a long time to cook. You have to cook it for at least 20-24 hours on sim heat. Cool it down for 2-3 hours before serving to your pup. It is very effective to make your dog feel better fast. 7.) Shredded Chicken And Scrambled EggShredded Chicken acts as an incentive for a dog with decreased appetite. Boiled and unseasoned shredded chicken is easy to eat and digest. They are full of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional value. Similarly, scrambled eggs can be served to a dog suffering from diarrhoea and upset stomach. Begin with 2-3 teaspoons of a scrambled egg. If everything goes well, increase the quantity gradually with every meal. Make a note that you provide small meals after small intervals of time instead of giving large meals after many hours. 8.) Over-the-Counter TreatmentMedicines should be provided as per the prescription of the vet. Some pet parent doesn't prefer medication for their pet. But if none of the diet plans is going well, than medicines are the only option. Dose and time of the drug must be given preference. An extra or low dose can alter the health of your dog and can make it worse.
